Four of their seven cats were rescued from the fire but sadly three died.

Firefighters were called to the blaze, in Sunnyside, just before 10.30am today, after receiving a 999 call and had to force entry into the two-storey, end of terraced cottage.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using a hose reel. A positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the house of heat and smoke.

The fire is thought to have been caused by an electricity cable under the floor boards.

Sevenoaks Watch Manager Harvey Dorling said: “Had this fire started overnight when the couple were asleep the outcome could have been very different because their escape route was compromised, making it difficult for them to get out of the property.

“Make sure your home and escape exits are clutter free. Large amounts of flammable material such as newspaper will mean that a fire will spread at a much faster rate.”

Harvey added: “The best way to protect yourself from fire is to make sure you fit working smoke alarms on every floor of your home and test the batteries regularly. It’s also really important that everyone makes sure that their household electrics are maintained and professionally checked.

Following this incident crews delivered fire safety advice to neighbouring properties.
